Nokia Goes Social with New C Smartphone Series
Nokia launched a new family of devices Tuesday — the C series. The company said the new series is the “core of the Nokia portfolio” and the devices — including the first one, the C5 — will be “optimized for social networking and sharing.”
Optimization means the C5 helps the user maintain a continual connection with his or her social circle. This includes direct access to the user’s favorite contacts right on the home screen, Facebook status updates visible on the phone, and easy access to social-networking sites.
Four Families of Devices
If you’re looking to meet up with your friends, the C5 provides the latest version of Ovi Maps with free walk and drive navigation, and location sharing with Facebook friends.
The smartphone also features a 3.2-megapixel camera, a numerical keypad, a 2GB memory microSD card (with support for cards up to 16 GB), and high-speed HSPA (High-Speed Packet Access) connectivity. Instant messaging and e-mail accounts from Ovi Mail and other providers, such as Google’s Gmail and Microsoft’s Windows Live Hotmail, are available through Nokia Messaging, and there is access to the Ovi Store for applications.
The smartphone, which will sell for about $180, will be available in the second quarter in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. At this price, it’s one of the least expensive smartphones from the Finnish device maker. Nokia didn’t provide any information about the U.S. release.
The introduction of the C series means Nokia now has four families of devices. There’s the E series for business, X for young people and music, and the advanced N series. The number after the letter is intended to indicate where the model resides in the family hierarchy. With 9 as the highest, this means the C5 starts this family’s launch from the middle.
